The Operations Engineering Specialist will participate in the management, performance, and operation of water and wastewater treatment systems to attain compliance in this heavily regulated industry.
What You Will Be Doing
- Monitor the performance of water and wastewater treatment systems within a quality management system
- Develop the ability to identify if new or changing conditions are occurring in treatment systems and respond appropriately. This includes unsafe or non-compliant conditions.
- Assist with the creation and final review of reports and compliance letters.
- Report on the performance of sites through the required chain of command including, preparation of reporting required for regulatory and contractual compliance.
- Evaluate and develop modified operations procedures in consultation with Lead Operators and Engineering Team.
- Obtain provincial water and wastewater treatment licenses issued by MECP.
- Review, understand, and interpret provincial and federal acts and regulations.
- Develop advanced knowledge and identify operational impacts of regulatory and technical mechanisms, including the EPA, Safe Drinking Water Act, Health Protection and Promotion Act, Ontario Water Resources Act, ECAs, PTTWs, and directives.
- Participate in execution of operations projects at sites under the direction of Lead Operators and Engineering Team.
- Work with management, operations, other departments, vendors, owners, contractors, and other stakeholders under direction of Lead Operators and Engineering Team to achieve desired project outcomes.
- Support project management, including work plan development, budget preparation and cost accounting.
- Participate as ON-Call AID to provide support for emergency calls.
- Respond to inquiries from Team Members through phone and email, redirecting Team Members to appropriate Team Members as required.
- Prepare and maintain a Standard Operating Procedure set to summarize how to complete this position in the absence of the Operations Engineer.

Who We Are Looking For
- Bachelor’s Degree in Engineering, Engineering Technologist or other relevant engineering program
- Valid G driver’s license and reliable vehicle
- 3 - 5 years of experience along with current status as an EIT, with 3 years of experience achieved toward obtaining P. Eng license
- OITs or higher licenses in Water and Wastewater Treatment preferred
- Strong working knowledge of biological relationships and experience in the design, specification, commissioning, and operation of control equipment for water/wastewater treatment systems
- Must be able to work independently with little supervision and be able to work quickly with extremely high accuracy
- High level of skill with MS Office 365 (Outlook, Excel, Word), AutoCAD, Visio, and other computer software including digital device applications
- The ability to efficiently multi-task and triage assignments to meet deadlines in a fast-paced environment
- Motivated self-starter with the ability to work effectively in both individual and team environments
- Demonstrated ability to plan and carry out projects including working in teams, managing resources, directing field programs, analyzing data and writing reports
- Great attention to detail and accuracy
- Strong written and verbal communication skills, along with active listening
- Confidence in asking questions and clarification on tasks assigned
- A desire to learn and take initiative to always improve
